Nottingham’s Alternative Rock band Hunch Power is back to school with its sixth single. ‘Accentuate the Negative’ is a song about reconnecting with your younger self and the influence of education on choosing the right path.
The lyrics and vocals deliver a sense of urgency and dissatisfaction. The music is an interesting fusion of Folk-Punk, Chamber Indie-Rock and even echoes of World Music from the Balkans to Cuba. It shows Hunch Power’s ability to craft songs that cross genre boundaries.
The concept for the video where the band plays craft instruments in an old-school classroom ties in with the structural funding crisis impacting public music education across the UK. As the song goes they outgrow their academy uniforms to reveal their Rock t-shirts underneath, showing us their true selves. Actually, there’s an on-going debate in the UK about scrapping school uniforms or making them gender-neutral.
“Kids from low-income families haven’t got the access to arts education that David Bowie or The Rolling Stones had in the 1960’s. We could be missing out on several generations of talented artists and professionals”, explains their lead singer Harvey Springfield.
Organisations such as the Musicians Union and The Independent Society of Musicians have been highlighting the urgent need for investment in music education and arts funding in order to protect jobs and the future of the music industry.
In an era where many artists rely on Artificial Intelligence to create music videos, Hunch Power has done exactly the opposite by crafting their own instruments. “We rediscovered a passion for arts & crafts which we hadn’t picked again since school. It’s very satisfying to know we made it all ourselves from scratch”.
The digital single releases globally on Friday 3rd October with the video premiering in late September.

Their lead singer Harvey will be presenting the song live at Frank Turner’s Lost Evenings festival in Edinburgh in September, as part of a charity open mic that raises funds for WAYout (Worldwide Arts for Youths).
